After just dropping her debut album, we entered the “Badlands” where director JODEB created a dystopian world that would become our setting, with Halsey as the fearless leader. Filmed in the incredibly cinematic Ka'a'awa Valley, on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, the video takes a “Hunger Games” and “Divergent” sort of vibe as she and the people of her community train for battle. Then unsuspectingly, a group of men with machine guns capture Halsey and attempt to put the singer to her death. However, her loyal followers come to their heroine’s rescue and they all escape, giving new meaning to the lyric, “the city’s ours until the fall.” … Halsey spoke about the project saying, “It’s this idea of these kids who are part of a generation where pop culture is so heavily influential that diversity doesn’t scare them the way it scared our parents and their parents. We’re more accepting of different walks of life …. So I think the ‘New Americana’ is racially ambiguous, people who are proud of their culture and they own it, possibly not from a binary of gender.”
